Limited Edition Fine Art Photography
Limited edition fine art photographs by Lewis James Phillips, made on film, drum scanned from the original negative and supplied with a certificate of authenticity.
Photographs made on film. Projects shaped by time. Artworks created to be collected.
The Limited Edition Fine Art Collection represents a more personal and considered side of my photographic practice. Each image originates from a dedicated project or body of work, often involving extensive planning, research and time spent understanding the subject before the photograph is made.
For nearly a decade, film photography has been central to this approach. Working with cameras including the Fujifilm 6×7, Yashica twin-lens reflex, 4×5 large-format field camera and 10×8 large-format field camera, I have chosen to work with negative film for the distinctive character, detail and creative discipline it brings to the photographic process.
These are not simply individual images gathered together in a collection. Each photograph belongs to a wider story, shaped by the location, subject, research and thinking behind the project. Many of these bodies of work explore specific periods in history, documenting places, people and subjects whose stories deserve to be preserved and shared.
The result is a collection of photographs created with intention, patience and a commitment to the subject. Each limited edition is intended for those who value photography as a fine art, appreciate the craft behind the image and want to understand the story that gives it meaning.
The Story Behind the Photograph
Every photograph in this collection has a story that extends beyond the finished image.
The research and preparation behind each project can be considerable, involving historical investigation, location research and the development of a clear understanding of the subject. The photograph itself may represent only a brief moment within a much longer process of discovery and observation.
Where a project relates to a particular period in history, that context becomes an important part of the work. The aim is not simply to record what is visible, but to explore the significance of the subject and the reasons it deserves attention.
Each artwork is accompanied by its own narrative, connecting the photograph to the wider project and explaining the thinking, research and circumstances behind its creation. This allows collectors to engage with the image on a deeper level, understanding not only what they are looking at, but the journey that brought the photograph into existence.
The Film and Photographic Process
Film remains at the heart of this collection.
Using cameras ranging from medium-format systems to 4×5 and 10×8 large-format field cameras, each project is approached with careful consideration of the equipment, film and photographic process best suited to the subject.
Working with negative film demands preparation and deliberation. Every exposure carries a degree of intention, encouraging a slower and more considered relationship with the subject. The camera format, composition, available light and choice of film all contribute to the character of the final photograph.
Once the original negative has been produced, it is professionally drum scanned to capture the image’s fine detail and tonal information at a high level of quality. This creates a high-resolution digital master from which the artwork can be prepared for its chosen presentation, while retaining the photographic character of the original film image.
The process brings together traditional photographic craft and carefully managed contemporary reproduction, allowing the original negative to become the foundation of a finished fine art piece.
The Print and Presentation
Each photograph is available in a choice of four presentation finishes, allowing the collector to select the format that best complements the image and its intended setting.
ChromaLuxe
A contemporary photographic presentation offering a smooth, refined surface and a distinctive finish. Supplied in a carefully selected tray frame.
Acrylic
A polished, modern presentation that gives the photograph visual depth and presence. Finished with a tray frame chosen to complement the artwork.
Fine Art Canvas
A tactile presentation that brings a different character to the photograph, with a considered finish and complementary tray frame.
Fine Art Print, Mount and Frame
A more traditional gallery presentation, with the photograph set within a generous double mount and finished in a Riviera frame. This option places the image within a classic fine art setting.
Each presentation is selected to complement the photograph, creating a finished artwork designed to be appreciated in its own right.
Limited Edition, Authentication and Provenance
The Limited Edition Fine Art Collection is distinct from the open edition prints available elsewhere on this website. These works are produced as limited editions for collectors who value the photographic process, the story behind the image and the provenance of the finished artwork.
Each piece is supplied with a certificate of authenticity, accompanied by a corresponding hologram attached to both the artwork and its certificate. This provides a physical link between the individual piece and its accompanying documentation.
Edition details and relevant artwork information are provided with each listing, allowing collectors to understand the edition to which their purchase belongs.
The combination of the original film-based photographic process, the research behind each project, the accompanying narrative and the authentication documentation forms an important part of each work’s identity.
A Work to Collect
These photographs are the result of time, research and a sustained commitment to the subject. They represent projects developed over time rather than images made simply to fill a collection.
For the collector, the finished artwork offers more than a photograph. It brings together the original film negative, the process of creating the final piece, the story behind the image and a documented connection to the work itself.
Each limited edition is an opportunity to own a considered piece of photographic practice, created to be lived with, studied and appreciated over time.
Made on film. Grounded in research. Presented as fine art.
